The West door

The impressive West Door is the most lavishly decorated part of the West Front

The door is surrounded by four rows of zig-zag patterns and then by two rows of birds' heads and beaks.  No one knows the origin or meaning of these beakheads, but there are similar ones to be found elsewhere in England and also in Normandy

The outer string of carvings contains some signs of the zodiac and the symbols of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Above the door is the circular ‘Eye of God’ window.
