Under the tower
The arches were intended to be seen as gateways into the more sacred part of the church. The four marble pillars, like the font, come from Tournai, and are the country's earliest example of marble set against limestone. In the thickness of the right-hand wall there is a 15th century staircase which led up to a rood loft. This was a platform across the church on which a large crucifix, or rood, will have been set. The right hand picture shows one of the dark circular marks on the walls where the bishop made crosses at the consecration of the church in the 12th century.
