The South door
Traditionally, a church's south door is the entrance which is used on most occasions. Here, however, this door had to be completely blocked when the organ was installed in 1875. Shortage of space is a big challenge in this small, narrow church. Though it no longer functions as a door, it still delights visitors with its remarkable and intriguing decorations. They are finely carved, indicative of the technical advances made in the 12th century. There are centaurs, a merman, a king, Sampson and the lion, and animals biting their own tails - said to be a symbol of eternity. The horsemen are especially noteworthy. There was once a porch here, probably built in the early 17th century, but it was removed in 1807 |
