The choir
This will have been the chancel of the Romanesque church, before it was extended in the 13th century. There are elaborate carvings here, including a bird on its nest (left hand picture) in the south west corner, and rosettes on all four corners. In the boss in the centre of the ceiling (see middle picture) can be seen a dragon sloughing off its skin - a symbol of new birth. In the centre is a hole through which a chain may have passed on which to hang either a corona of lights or a vessel known as a pyx, containing the consecrated Bread or Host. The windows are in 14th century Decorated-style, replacing the original Romanesque ones, whose arches can still be seen around them. |
