The Baptistry

This is the first square ‘room’ of the church, intended for baptisms or “christenings”.

The font is as old as the church, and is made of Tournai marble (the same as the marble pillars under the Tower). It must have collapsed at some time, because it is very cracked and one of the legs has been replaced by a pillar

The carving round the side windows is Romanesque, unlike the others in the church which have been modified to the later Gothic style.

One of them now contains the beautiful Piper Window

Facing the font are some modern oak pews, designed by Helen Axworthy, which were added during the 1995 restoration of the church.

Also in this picture, you can see the processional cross used at the Parish Communion on Sundays.

The Baptistry also contains the small organ ingeniously squeezed into this small space by blocking the South door.
