Why this appeal?
It is more than 15 years since the last, extensive and very successful, refurbishment at St Mary’s.
We believe that now is the right time to further the good work done then.
In common with every generation through its long history, we need (sensitively) to adapt the building to
the changing needs of the church congregation and the local community we serve.
-
More flexible use of space, bringing a greater sense of openness and light, is a pressing need,
given the increasingly varied forms of worship and our real concern to make fuller use of the church building.
-
We can also do more to bring out the great beauty and craftsmanship of the original,
and very special, late-Norman building. And we can use this opportunity to add features which bring a contemporary grace of their own,
in harmony with the original 12th- and 13th- century work.
