Iffley Music Society

Iffley Music Society, founded in 1996, aims to present top-class professional concerts in an informal village setting. We have two superb venues, the Church Hall, medieval, but thoroughly modernised. Its capacity is about 90, providing an informal atmosphere, which has been favourably commented on by virtually every one of our visiting musicians. Iffley Church was built in the middle of the 12th century and survives with remarkably little change from that date. Recent refurbishment of the chancel gives a greatly improved performance space, room enough last December to accommodate nearly forty singers of the Schola Cantorum. New lighting gives an improved view of the detail of the Norman architecture. The capacity is about 120.

Each season, running from September to the summer, has recently presented nine concerts, five of these combining to form a festival during a weekend in February. The rest are spread over the season. Usually this culminates in an informal community concert at which we aim to give an opportunity to local talent (which may be professional, as well as amateur). James Gilchrist sang for us last season and is planning to come again on 11 November.

We tend to use the church for choral concerts, where the acoustic is warm and clear. String ensembles have also proved popular with performers as well as audience. The space is unusually intimate for a church. We sometimes hire a grand piano for concerts in the hall. Audiences are almost on top of the performers, but everyone seems to enjoy this, too!

Membership, costing £10 per household per season, conveys certain privileges, as well as being informed of concerts well in advance. Tickets are usually priced at £12, but there is normally a reduction on each of two tickets for members and student tickets usually cost £5. They are available in Iffley Shop or from me. Membership is available free for the remaining part of the season and I warmly invite prospective new members to contact me.

Our next concert is in Iffley Church (Church Way, Iffley, OX4 4EH) on Friday 11 November at 7.30 pm.

I hope to see you in Iffley Church on 11 November,
Michael Bourdeaux.
